What do they do with the makeup that you return in dept. stores? Is it a big deal to return something ?

They throw it away. It's been used, so they can't sell it. It's not a huge deal as long as you don't return stuff all the time. If something makes you break out, or the color isn't quite right, then it's fine. The people at the makeup counter will start to not like you if you always return products (especially if it's used up). Few, if any, stores allow makeup returns because they cannot sell what is brought back. If the store doesn't have a contract with the distributor allowing them to recoup the cost of returned makeup, the store loses profit, because they have to throw it away.
