What is your age group? You can probably go look at teen magazines like Seventeen to find out the current trends. If you're looking for something more high fashion, try Style.com--you can view runway trends and photos.
Also, your best best would just be to look and see what your peers are wearing. It also helps to look at clothing catalogues (you can view them online too) for popular companies. i.e., look at the trend in the clothes sold at Forever21.com, etc.
What ';scene'; are you into? If you're going to conform, don't conform to something you don't like or don't feel yourself wearing. One trend that's big at my school (I'm in college) is the whole ';indie'; scene. Girls wearing their cute knitted berets, skinny jeans, plaid flannel shirts, mocassins, etc. There's also a big emphasis on interesting thrift-store finds (i.e. crazy necklaces). Urban Outfitters is a good example of this trend.
It depends on the season, too. I don't think any basic summer clothes could ever go out of style--a cute dress, denim skirt, shirt, etc, won't go out of style.
It helps to look at the blog of a fashionable individual.

Maybe try joining a livejournal group or something.
Hope that helps! What are the trendy stores, clothes, and makeup right now?
